[245] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī … There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, there are these four nutriments (āhārā) for the maintenance of beings that have come to be or for the assistance of those seeking birth (sambhavesī). What four? Edible food (kavaḷīkāra āhāra), gross or subtle; contact (phassa) is the second; mental volition (manosañcetanā) is the third; consciousness (viññāṇa) is the fourth. These, bhikkhus, are the four nutriments for the maintenance of beings that have come to be or for the assistance of those seeking birth."
