[418] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. … There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, there are these four elements (dhātu). What four? The earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element. Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand as it really is (yathābhūta) the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of these four elements … [to be expanded in full] … understand … having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), they dwell having entered upon it."
