[417] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins understand as it really is the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in the case of these four elements (dhātu) — these ascetics or brahmins, bhikkhus, are indeed reckoned as ascetics among ascetics and reckoned as brahmins among brahmins; and those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood.
