[419] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī … There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand the earth element (paṭhavīdhātu), do not understand the origin of the earth element, do not understand the cessation of the earth element, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the earth element; do not understand the water element (āpodhātu) …; do not understand the fire element (tejodhātu) …; do not understand the air element (vāyodhātu), do not understand the origin of the air element, do not understand the cessation of the air element, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the air element — these ascetics or brahmins, bhikkhus, are not reckoned by me as ascetics among ascetics, nor as brahmins among brahmins; and those venerable ones do not, by realizing it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood."
