[38] Dwelling at Sāvatthī. … "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa), do not understand the origin of aging-and-death, do not understand the cessation of aging-and-death, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of aging-and-death; … do not understand birth … existence (bhava) … clinging (upādāna) … craving (taṇhā) … feeling (vedanā) … contact (phassa) … the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) … name-and-form (nāmarūpa) … consciousness … do not understand volitional formations, do not understand the origin of volitional formations, do not understand the cessation of volitional formations, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations — these, bhikkhus, I do not consider to be ascetics among ascetics or brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, in this very life, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood."
