[39] "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins understand aging and death (jarā-maraṇa), understand the origin of aging and death, understand the cessation of aging and death, understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of aging and death; understand birth (jāti) … existence (bhava) … clinging (upādāna) … craving (taṇhā) … feeling (vedanā) … contact (phassa) … the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) … name-and-form (nāmarūpa) … consciousness (viññāṇa) … understand volitional formations (saṅkhārā), understand the origin of volitional formations, understand the cessation of volitional formations, understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations — these ascetics or brahmins, bhikkhus, are acknowledged as ascetics among ascetics and acknowledged as brahmins among brahmins; and those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā) in this very life, dwell having attained the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood."
