[40] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī … "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand these dhammas, do not understand the origin (samudaya) of these dhammas, do not understand the cessation (nirodha) of these dhammas, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of these dhammas — which dhammas do they not understand? The origin of which dhammas do they not understand? The cessation of which dhammas do they not understand? The way of practice leading to the cessation of which dhammas do they not understand?
They do not understand aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa); they do not understand the origin of aging-and-death; they do not understand the cessation of aging-and-death; they do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of aging-and-death. They do not understand birth (jāti) … existence (bhava) … clinging (upādāna) … craving (taṇhā) … feeling (vedanā) … contact (phassa) … the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) … name-and-form (nāmarūpa) … consciousness (viññāṇa) … They do not understand volitional formations (saṅkhārā); they do not understand the origin of volitional formations; they do not understand the cessation of volitional formations; they do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations. These are the dhammas they do not understand; it is the origin of these dhammas they do not understand; it is the cessation of these dhammas they do not understand; it is the way of practice leading to the cessation of these dhammas they do not understand.
Bhikkhus, such ascetics or brahmins are not reckoned by me as ascetics among ascetics or as brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, by realizing it for themselves with direct knowledge, in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood."
