[693] "Here, friend, I said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, it is said, "one of aroused energy, one of aroused energy." In what way, venerable sir, is one of aroused energy?' When this was said, friend, the Blessed One said this to me: 'Here, Moggallāna, a bhikkhu dwells with energy (vīriya) aroused, thus: "Willingly, let only skin, sinews, and bone remain in this body; let the flesh and blood dry up; there shall be no slackening of energy so long as I have not attained what can be attained by human strength, by human energy, by human exertion." It is in this way, Moggallāna, that one is of aroused energy (āraddhavīriya).' Such, friend, was the talk on the Dhamma that I had with the Blessed One."
