[710] When the Venerable Nanda had sat down to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Nanda, it is not fitting for you, a clansman (kulaputta) who has gone forth out of faith from the household life into homelessness, that you should wear robes beaten and pressed smooth on both sides, anoint your eyes, and carry a glossy bowl. This, Nanda, is fitting for you, a clansman who has gone forth out of faith from the household life into homelessness: that you should be a forest-dweller (āraññika), an almsfood-eater (piṇḍapātika), a wearer of rag-robes (paṃsukūlika), and that you should dwell without concern for sensual pleasures."
