[75] The Blessed One said: "Good, good, Ānanda! It is just as Sāriputta, answering rightly, would answer. Suffering (dukkha), Ānanda, has been declared by me to be dependently arisen (paṭiccasamuppanna). Dependent on what? Dependent on contact (phassa). Saying thus, one would be stating what has been said by me and would not misrepresent me with what is untrue; one would answer in accordance with the Dhamma, and no legitimate consequence of one's assertion would provide a ground for censure.
"Therein, Ānanda, as for those ascetics and brahmins, proponents of kamma, who declare suffering to be made by oneself — that too is conditioned by contact. As for those who … As for those who … As for those ascetics and brahmins, proponents of kamma, who declare suffering to have arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another — that too is conditioned by contact.
"Therein, Ānanda, as for those ascetics and brahmins, proponents of kamma, who declare suffering to be made by oneself — that they should experience it apart from contact: such a thing is impossible. As for those who … As for those who … As for those ascetics and brahmins, proponents of kamma, who declare suffering to have arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another — that they should experience it apart from contact: such a thing is impossible."
