[109] When this was said, a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "But how, venerable sir, being liberated thus: 'It might not be, and it might not be mine; it will not be, and it will not be mine' — might a bhikkhu cut the lower fetters (orambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni)?"
"Here, bhikkhu, an uninstructed worldling (assutavā puthujjano), one who has no regard for the noble ones … undisciplined in the Dhamma of good persons (sappurisadhamma), regards form (rūpa) as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form. Feeling (vedanā) … Perception … Volitional formations … He regards consciousness as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness.
"He does not understand impermanent form as it really is (yathābhūta) thus: 'Form is impermanent.' He does not understand impermanent feeling as it really is thus: 'Feeling is impermanent.' He does not understand impermanent perception as it really is thus: 'Perception is impermanent.' He does not understand impermanent volitional formations as they really are thus: 'Volitional formations are impermanent.' He does not understand impermanent consciousness as it really is thus: 'Consciousness is impermanent.'
"He does not understand form that is suffering (dukkha) as it really is thus: 'Form is suffering.' Feeling that is suffering … Perception that is suffering … Volitional formations that are suffering … He does not understand consciousness that is suffering as it really is thus: 'Consciousness is suffering.'
