[506] At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, the desire and lust (chandarāga) for the earth element (pathavīdhātu) — this is a corruption (upakkilesa) of the mind (citta). The desire and lust for the water element … the desire and lust for the fire element … the desire and lust for the air element … the desire and lust for the space element … the desire and lust for the consciousness element — this is a corruption of the mind. When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the corruption of the mind (cetaso upakkilesa) in these six cases, his mind (citta) inclines toward renunciation (nekkhamma); and the mind, fully developed by renunciation, appears wieldy for those things that are to be realized by direct knowledge (abhiññā)."
