[519] At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, there are these four modes of generation (yoni) of nāgas. What four? Nāgas born from eggs (aṇḍaja), nāgas born from the womb (jalābuja), nāgas born from moisture (saṃsedaja), and nāgas of spontaneous birth (upapātika). Therein, bhikkhus, nāgas born from the womb, born from moisture, and of spontaneous birth are more excellent than nāgas born from eggs. Therein, bhikkhus, nāgas born from moisture and of spontaneous birth are more excellent than nāgas born from eggs and born from the womb. Therein, bhikkhus, nāgas of spontaneous birth are more excellent than nāgas born from eggs, born from the womb, and born from moisture. These, bhikkhus, are the four modes of generation of nāgas."
