[531] At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, there are these four modes of birth of supaṇṇas (supaṇṇayoni). What four? Egg-born (aṇḍaja) supaṇṇas, womb-born (jalābuja) supaṇṇas, moisture-born (saṃsedaja) supaṇṇas, and spontaneously born (upapātika) supaṇṇas. "Therein, bhikkhus, egg-born supaṇṇas carry off egg-born nāgas, but not womb-born ones, not moisture-born ones, not spontaneously born ones. Therein, bhikkhus, womb-born supaṇṇas carry off egg-born and womb-born nāgas, but not moisture-born ones, not spontaneously born ones. Therein, bhikkhus, moisture-born supaṇṇas carry off egg-born, womb-born, and moisture-born nāgas, but not spontaneously born ones. Therein, bhikkhus, spontaneously born supaṇṇas carry off egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, and spontaneously born nāgas. "These, bhikkhus, are the four modes of birth of supaṇṇas."
