At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, Vacchagotta the wanderer said this to the Blessed One: "What, Master Gotama, is the cause, what is the condition, whereby these many various views arise in the world: 'The world is eternal,' or 'The world is not eternal,' … *(elided in the Pali: the standard series of speculative views)* … or 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death'?"
"From not seeing form (rūpa), Vaccha, … *(elided in the Pali: from not seeing the origin of form, from not seeing the cessation of form)* … from not seeing the way of practice leading to the cessation of form … *(elided in the Pali: the sutta continues with the arising of these many views, and the concluding refrain, 'This, Vaccha, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby these many various views arise in the world…')*"
*(The Thai Royal control here supplies in full the conclusion of the preceding sutta: "…Vaccha, this is the cause, this is the condition, whereby these many various views arise in the world: 'The world is eternal' … 'It is not that the being after death is reborn, nor that it is not reborn.'")*
