[585] At Sāvatthī. There … "Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of meditators (jhāyī). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in concentration (samādhi) regarding concentration, but not skilled in attainment (samāpatti) regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in attainment regarding concentration, but not skilled in concentration regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is neither skilled in concentration regarding concentration nor skilled in attainment regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is both skilled in concentration regarding concentration and skilled in attainment regarding concentration. Therein, bhikkhus, the meditator who is both skilled in concentration regarding concentration and skilled in attainment regarding concentration — he is the chief, the best, the foremost, the highest, and the most excellent of these four kinds of meditators. Just as, bhikkhus, from a cow comes milk, from milk comes curd, from curd comes butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream-of-ghee, which is reckoned the chief among them; even so, bhikkhus, the meditator who is both skilled in concentration regarding concentration and skilled in attainment regarding concentration — he is the chief, the best, the foremost, the highest, and the most excellent of these four kinds of meditators."
