Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Khandhavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 17 · Section 584

[584] Sāvatthī. "It is, Vaccha, because of not directly experiencing (appaccakkhakamma) consciousness, not directly experiencing the origin of consciousness, not directly experiencing the cessation of consciousness, not directly experiencing the way of practice leading to the cessation of consciousness, that these various speculative views (diṭṭhigata) arise in the world: 'The world is eternal,' or … 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.' "This, Vaccha, is the cause, this is the condition, why these various speculative views arise in the world: 'The world is eternal,' or 'The world is not eternal,' or 'The world is finite,' or 'The world is infinite,' or 'The soul (jīva) and the body are the same,' or 'The soul is one thing, the body another,' or 'The Tathāgata exists after death,' or 'The Tathāgata does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.' "This, Vaccha, is the cause, this is the condition, why these various speculative views arise in the world: 'The world is eternal,' or 'The world is not eternal,' or … 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'" (Taken as a single group, these constitute fifty-five suttantas.) The Vacchagotta Saṃyutta is finished. This is the summary (uddāna) of the Saṃyutta: Through not knowing and not seeing, through non-breakthrough, non-understanding, non-penetration, non-discernment, through non-observation, non-consideration, non-reviewing, non-close-discernment, and through not directly experiencing. _______________ The Samādhi Saṃyutta
