[598] Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of meditators (jhāyī). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in attainment (samāpattikusala) regarding concentration (samādhi) but is not skilled in the object (ārammaṇakusala) regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in the object regarding concentration but is not skilled in attainment regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is neither skilled in attainment regarding concentration nor skilled in the object regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is both skilled in attainment regarding concentration and skilled in the object regarding concentration. Therein … and the finest.
