[81] At Sāvatthī. The Blessed One said this to the Venerable Ānanda, who was seated to one side: "Ānanda, if they should ask you thus: 'Friend Ānanda, of which dhammas has arising (uppāda) been evident, has passing away (vaya) been evident, has alteration of that which persists (ṭhitassa aññathattaṃ) been evident? Of which dhammas will arising be evident, will passing away be evident, will alteration of that which persists be evident? Of which dhammas is arising evident, is passing away evident, is alteration of that which persists evident?' — being asked thus, Ānanda, how would you answer?"
"If, venerable sir, they should ask me thus: 'Friend Ānanda, of which dhammas has arising been evident, has passing away been evident, has alteration of that which persists been evident? Of which dhammas will arising be evident, will passing away be evident, will alteration of that which persists be evident? Of which dhammas is arising evident, is passing away evident, is alteration of that which persists evident?' — being asked thus, venerable sir, I would answer thus:
"'Friends, whatever form (rūpa) is past, ceased, changed: its arising was evident, its passing away was evident, the alteration of it while persisting was evident. Whatever feeling (vedanā) is past, ceased, changed: its arising was evident, its passing away was evident, the alteration of it while persisting was evident. Whatever perception … Whatever volitional formations are past, ceased, changed: their arising was evident, their passing away was evident, the alteration of them while persisting was evident. Whatever consciousness is past, ceased, changed: its arising was evident, its passing away was evident, the alteration of it while persisting was evident. It is of these dhammas, friends, that arising was evident, that passing away was evident, that alteration of them while persisting was evident.
"'Friends, whatever form is unborn, unmanifested: its arising will be evident, its passing away will be evident, the alteration of it while persisting will be evident. Whatever feeling is unborn, unmanifested: its arising will be evident, its passing away will be evident, the alteration of it while persisting will be evident. Whatever perception … Whatever volitional formations are unborn, unmanifested: their arising will be evident, their passing away will be evident, the alteration of them while persisting will be evident. Whatever consciousness is unborn, unmanifested: its arising will be evident, its passing away will be evident, the alteration of it while persisting will be evident. It is of these dhammas, friends, that arising will be evident, that passing away will be evident, that alteration of them while persisting will be evident.
