[450] And what, Bhikkhus, is carnal happiness (sāmisa sukha)? There are, Bhikkhus, these five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa). What five? Forms cognizable by the eye that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensuality, tantalizing … tangibles cognizable by the body that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensuality, tantalizing. These, Bhikkhus, are the five cords of sensual pleasure. Whatever happiness and joy arise in dependence on these five cords of sensual pleasure — this, Bhikkhus, is called carnal happiness.
