[451] "And what, bhikkhus, is happiness not of the flesh (nirāmisaṃ sukhaṃ)? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination (vitakka-vicāra), with rapture and happiness born of seclusion. … And with the fading away of rapture, he dwells equanimous, and, with mindfulness and clear comprehension, he experiences happiness with the body; he enters and dwells in the third jhāna, of which the noble ones declare: 'He is equanimous, mindful, one who dwells happily.' This, bhikkhus, is called happiness not of the flesh."
