[571] On one occasion the Venerable Godatta was dwelling at Macchikāsaṇḍa, in the Ambāṭaka Grove. Then Citta the householder (gahapati) approached the Venerable Godatta; having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Godatta and sat down to one side. As Citta the householder was sitting to one side, the Venerable Godatta said this to him: "Householder, this immeasurable liberation of mind (appamāṇā cetovimutti), this liberation of mind by nothingness (ākiñcaññā cetovimutti), this liberation of mind by emptiness (suññatā cetovimutti), and this signless liberation of mind (animittā cetovimutti)—are these things different in meaning and different in phrasing, or are they one in meaning, differing only in phrasing?"
"Venerable sir, there is a method (pariyāya) in dependence upon which these things are different in meaning and different in phrasing; and there is also, venerable sir, a method in dependence upon which these things are one in meaning, differing only in phrasing."
