[572] "And what, venerable sir, is the method of exposition (pariyāya) by which these dhammas are different in meaning and different in phrasing? Here, venerable sir, a bhikkhu dwells pervading one quarter with a mind (citta) imbued with loving-kindness; likewise the second; likewise the third; likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to oneself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — vast, exalted, measureless, without hostility, without ill will. With a mind imbued with compassion … With a mind imbued with altruistic joy … He dwells pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with equanimity; likewise the second; likewise the third; likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to oneself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity — vast, exalted, measureless, without hostility, without ill will. This, venerable sir, is called the measureless liberation of mind (appamāṇā cetovimutti)."
