[1354] "Bhikkhus, how is concentration (samādhi) by mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati) developed, how is it cultivated, so that it is peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated blissful dwelling, and it makes evil unwholesome states, whenever they arise, vanish and subside on the spot? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, or gone to the foot of a tree, or gone to an empty dwelling, sits down; having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness in front of him, just mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out. … (To be expanded.) … He trains thus: 'Contemplating relinquishment, I shall breathe in'; he trains thus: 'Contemplating relinquishment, I shall breathe out.' Bhikkhus, when concentration by mindfulness of breathing is developed in this way, cultivated in this way, it is peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated blissful dwelling, and it makes evil unwholesome states, whenever they arise, vanish and subside on the spot."
