[1387] "And how, Ānanda, are the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) developed, how are they cultivated (bahulīkata), so that they fulfil the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga)? On whatever occasion, Ānanda, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, on that occasion mindfulness is established in him, unmuddled. On whatever occasion, Ānanda, a bhikkhu's mindfulness is established and unmuddled, on that occasion the awakening factor of mindfulness is aroused in the bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness; on that occasion the awakening factor of mindfulness reaches fulfilment by development in the bhikkhu. Dwelling thus mindful, he investigates that dhamma with wisdom, examines it, and undertakes a thorough inquiry into it."
