[290] "And how, bhikkhus, are the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) developed, how are they made much of, so that they fulfill the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga)?
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having put away covetousness and grief regarding the world — on that occasion unmuddled mindfulness is established in him.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion unmuddled mindfulness is established in a bhikkhu, on that occasion the mindfulness factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening; on that occasion the mindfulness factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. Dwelling thus mindful, he investigates that dhamma with wisdom, examines it, and enters upon a full inquiry into it.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu, dwelling thus mindful, investigates that dhamma with wisdom, examines it, and enters upon a full inquiry into it, on that occasion the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening; on that occasion the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. In him who investigates that dhamma with wisdom, examines it, and enters upon a full inquiry into it, unflagging energy is aroused.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion unflagging energy is aroused in a bhikkhu who investigates that dhamma with wisdom, examines it, and enters upon a full inquiry into it, on that occasion the energy factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the energy factor of awakening; on that occasion the energy factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. In one whose energy is aroused, rapture not of the flesh arises.
On whatever occasion rapture not of the flesh arises in a bhikkhu whose energy is aroused, on that occasion the rapture factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the rapture factor of awakening; on that occasion the rapture factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. In one whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil and the mind becomes tranquil.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, in a bhikkhu whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil and the mind becomes tranquil, on that occasion the tranquility factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the tranquility factor of awakening; on that occasion the tranquility factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. In one whose body is tranquil and who is happy, the mind (citta) becomes concentrated.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, in a bhikkhu whose body is tranquil and who is happy, the mind becomes concentrated, on that occasion the concentration (samādhi) factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the concentration factor of awakening; on that occasion the concentration factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu. He closely looks on with equanimity at the mind thus concentrated.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu closely looks on with equanimity at the mind thus concentrated, on that occasion the equanimity factor of awakening is aroused in that bhikkhu; on that occasion the bhikkhu develops the equanimity factor of awakening; on that occasion the equanimity factor of awakening comes to fulfillment by development in that bhikkhu.
Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) … the mind … contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having put away covetousness and grief regarding the world — on that occasion unmuddled mindfulness is established in him.
Bhikkhus, the four establishments of mindfulness, developed thus and made much of thus, fulfill the seven factors of awakening."
