[291] And how, bhikkhus, are the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) developed, how are they cultivated, so that they fulfill true knowledge (vijjā) and liberation (vimutti)?
Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening, relying on seclusion (viveka), relying on dispassion (virāga), relying on cessation (nirodha), ripening in relinquishment (vossagga). He develops the investigation-of-dhammas (dhammavicaya) factor of awakening … he develops the energy (vīriya) factor of awakening … he develops the rapture (pīti) factor of awakening … he develops the tranquility (passaddhi) factor of awakening … he develops the concentration (samādhi) factor of awakening … he develops the equanimity (upekkhā) factor of awakening, relying on seclusion, relying on dispassion, relying on cessation, ripening in relinquishment.
Thus developed, bhikkhus, thus cultivated, the seven factors of awakening fulfill true knowledge and liberation.
This is what the Blessed One said. Gladdened, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's words.
The Ānāpānasati Sutta, the eighth, is concluded.
