[1398] "And how, Ānanda, are the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) developed, how are they cultivated, so that they fulfill true knowledge (vijjā) and liberation (vimutti)? Here, Ānanda, a bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness (satisambojjhaṅga), based upon seclusion (viveka), based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation (nirodha), maturing in relinquishment (vossagga). He develops the awakening factors of investigation of dhammas, energy, rapture, tranquility, concentration (samādhi), and equanimity, based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is when the seven factors of awakening are developed in this way, Ānanda, cultivated in this way, that they fulfill true knowledge and liberation."
