[1465] Again, householders, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) reflects thus: 'If someone were to address me with idle chatter (samphappalāpa), that would not be pleasing or agreeable to me. And if I were to address another with idle chatter, that would not be pleasing or agreeable to the other either. That thing which is displeasing and disagreeable to me is displeasing and disagreeable to the other as well. How could I bind another to that thing which is displeasing and disagreeable to me?' Having reflected thus, he himself abstains from idle chatter, he encourages others in abstinence from idle chatter, and he speaks in praise of abstinence from idle chatter. Thus this verbal conduct (vacīsamācāra) of his becomes purified in three respects.
