[1518] "Venerable sir, when this was said, Godhā the Sakyan said this to me: 'Mahānāma, I know a person who possesses three qualities to be a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the lower realms (avinipātadhamma), fixed in destiny (niyata), bound for awakening (sambodhiparāyana). What three? Here, Mahānāma, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: "Thus indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." He possesses confirmed confidence in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha thus: "Well practiced is the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world." Possessing these three qualities, Mahānāma, I know a person to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the lower realms, fixed in destiny, bound for awakening. But you, Mahānāma — possessing how many qualities do you know a person to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the lower realms, fixed in destiny, bound for awakening?'"
