[1572] "Householder, for an instructed noble disciple (sutavā ariyasāvako) who possesses four things there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come. Which four? Here, householder, an instructed noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' And when he beholds in himself that confirmed confidence in the Buddha, there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come.
"Furthermore, householder, an instructed noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence in the Dhamma thus: 'The Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One … to be personally experienced by the wise.' And when he beholds in himself that confirmed confidence in the Dhamma, there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come.
"Furthermore, householder, an instructed noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence in the Saṅgha thus: 'The Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world.' And when he beholds in himself that confirmed confidence in the Saṅgha, there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come.
"Furthermore, householder, an instructed noble disciple possesses the virtues (sīla) dear to the noble ones — unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). And when he beholds in himself those virtues dear to the noble ones, there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come.
"Householder, for an instructed noble disciple who possesses these four things there is no trepidation, no terror, no fear of death concerning the life to come."
