[1575] What are the five perils and enmities (bhaya-vera) that have been stilled?
Householder, whatever peril and enmity one who destroys life generates, on account of destroying life — peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, and peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come — and whatever mental suffering (dukkha) and grief he experiences: for one who abstains from destroying life, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. Householder, one who takes what is not given … Householder, one who engages in sexual misconduct … Householder, one who speaks falsely … Householder, whatever peril and enmity one who indulges in liquors, wines, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness generates, on account of indulging in liquors, wines, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness — peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, and peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come — and whatever mental suffering and grief he experiences: for one who abstains from liquors, wines, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness, that peril and enmity is thus stilled.
These are the five perils and enmities that have been stilled.
