[1585] Bhikkhus, there are these four streams of merit (puññābhisanda), streams of the wholesome, nutriments of happiness. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) possesses unwavering confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha: "Thus indeed is that Blessed One … the teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." This is the first stream of merit, stream of the wholesome, nutriment of happiness. Furthermore, bhikkhus, a noble disciple … in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha … dwells at home with a mind (citta) free from the stain of miserliness, freely generous, open-handed, delighting in relinquishment, responsive to requests, delighting in giving and sharing. This is the fourth stream of merit, stream of the wholesome, nutriment of happiness. These, bhikkhus, are the four streams of merit, streams of the wholesome, nutriments of happiness.
