[1595] "Bhikkhus, just as when the sky rains down in heavy drops upon a mountain top, that water, flowing down along the slope, fills the mountain clefts, gullies, and creeks; the mountain clefts, gullies, and creeks, being full, fill the small pools; the small pools, being full, fill the large pools; the large pools, being full, fill the small rivers; the small rivers, being full, fill the great rivers; the great rivers, being full, fill the great ocean — even so, bhikkhus, for a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka), the confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha, the confirmed confidence in the Dhamma, the confirmed confidence in the Saṅgha, and the virtues (sīlāni) dear to the noble ones — these things, flowing together and having gone to the far shore, lead to the destruction of the taints (āsava)."
