[1627] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in Nigrodha's Park. Now on that occasion many bhikkhus were making a robe for the Blessed One, thinking: "When the robe is finished, at the end of the three months the Blessed One will set out on a wandering tour."
Mahānāma the Sakyan heard: "It is said that many bhikkhus are making a robe for the Blessed One, thinking: 'When the robe is finished, at the end of the three months the Blessed One will set out on a wandering tour.'" Then Mahānāma the Sakyan approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Mahānāma the Sakyan said this to the Blessed One:
"Bhante, I have heard this: 'It is said that many bhikkhus are making a robe for the Blessed One, thinking: "When the robe is finished, at the end of the three months the Blessed One will set out on a wandering tour."' But, Bhante, I have not heard this in the Blessed One's presence, nor received it in his presence: how a wise lay follower (upāsaka) who is sick, afflicted, gravely ill should be exhorted by a wise lay follower."
