[1654] Setting at Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, develop concentration (samādhi). A bhikkhu who is concentrated, bhikkhus, understands as it really is (yathābhūta). And what does he understand as it really is? He understands as it really is: 'This is suffering (dukkha)'; he understands as it really is: 'This is the origin (samudaya) of suffering'; he understands as it really is: 'This is the cessation (nirodha) of suffering'; he understands as it really is: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.' Bhikkhus, develop concentration. A bhikkhu who is concentrated, bhikkhus, understands as it really is. Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made [with regard to]: 'This is suffering'; exertion should be made: 'This is the origin of suffering'; exertion should be made: 'This is the cessation of suffering'; exertion should be made: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
