[1656] Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen (kulaputtā) in the past rightly went forth from the household life into homelessness, all of them did so for the realization (abhisamaya) of the four noble truths (ariyasacca) as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen in the future will rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, all of them will do so for the realization of the four noble truths as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen at present rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, all of them do so for the realization of the four noble truths as they really are. Of which four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha), the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen in the past rightly went forth from the household life into homelessness, will go forth, or go forth, all of them do so for the realization of these same four noble truths as they really are. Therefore, bhikkhus, an effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is suffering' … an effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
