[1657] Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen in the past, having rightly gone forth from the household life into homelessness, comprehended as it really is (yathābhūta) — all of them comprehended the four noble truths as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen in the future, having rightly gone forth from the household life into homelessness, will comprehend as it really is — all of them will comprehend the four noble truths as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen at present, having rightly gone forth from the household life into homelessness, comprehend as it really is — all of them comprehend the four noble truths as they really are. What four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha), the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. Bhikkhus, whatever clansmen in the past, having rightly gone forth from the household life into homelessness, comprehended, will comprehend, or comprehend as it really is — all of them comprehend these four noble truths as they really are. Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … exertion should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
