[1658] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins in the past fully awakened as it really is (yathābhūta), all of them fully awakened to the four noble truths (ariyasacca) as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins in the future will fully awaken as it really is, all of them will fully awaken to the four noble truths as they really are. Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins in the present fully awaken as it really is, all of them fully awaken to the four noble truths as they really are. Which four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha) … the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation (nirodha) of suffering. Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins fully awakened as it really is in the past, will fully awaken in the future, or fully awaken in the present—all of them fully awaken to these four noble truths as they really are. Therefore, bhikkhus, an effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … an effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
