[1707] Bhikkhus, there are these four noble truths. What four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha), the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. These, bhikkhus, are the four noble truths — actual (tathāni), not unreal (avitathāni), not otherwise (anaññathāni); therefore they are called noble truths. Therefore, bhikkhus, an exertion should be made: 'This is suffering' … an exertion should be made: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
