[1706] Bhikkhus, those for whom you have compassion, and those who would think you worth listening to — whether friends, colleagues, relatives, or blood-kin — they, bhikkhus, should be exhorted (samādapetabbā) by you, settled, and established in the breakthrough (abhisamaya), as it really is, to the four noble truths. To which four? To the noble truth of suffering (dukkha), to the noble truth of the origin of suffering, to the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, to the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. Bhikkhus, those for whom you have compassion, and those who would think you worth listening to — whether friends, colleagues, relatives, or blood-kin — … they, bhikkhus, should be exhorted by you, settled, and established in the breakthrough, as it really is, to these four noble truths. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to realize]: "This is suffering" … effort should be made [to realize]: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
