[1708] Bhikkhus, there are these four noble truths (ariyasacca). What four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha), the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. In the world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, the Tathāgata is the Noble One; therefore these are called the noble truths. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
