[1703] At Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four noble truths (ariyasacca). What four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha) … the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. These, bhikkhus, are the four noble truths. It is because he has fully awakened to these four noble truths as they really are (yathābhūta) that the Tathāgata is called the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One (sammāsambuddha). Therefore, bhikkhus, exertion should be made to understand: "This is suffering" … exertion should be made to understand: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
