[398] "And how, Kuṇḍaliya, are the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) developed, how are they cultivated (bahulīkatā), so that they fulfil the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga)? Here, Kuṇḍaliya, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; in feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. It is when the four establishments of mindfulness are developed thus, Kuṇḍaliya, cultivated thus, that they fulfil the seven factors of awakening."
