[43] Bhikkhus, suppose a spike of hill-rice (sāli) or a spike of barley (yava) were rightly directed (sammāpaṇihita): when trodden upon by the hand or the foot, it is possible that it will pierce the hand or the foot, or draw blood. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, the spike is rightly directed. In just the same way, bhikkhus, it is indeed possible that a bhikkhu, by a rightly directed view, by a rightly directed development of the path, will pierce ignorance (avijjā), arouse true knowledge (vijjā), and realize Nibbāna. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, his view is rightly directed.
