[43] Bhikkhus, suppose a spike of hill rice or a spike of barley were rightly directed (sammāpaṇihita), and were pressed upon by a hand or a foot: it is possible that it would pierce the hand or the foot, or draw blood. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, the spike is rightly directed. So too, bhikkhus, it is possible that a bhikkhu with a rightly directed mind (citta) will pierce ignorance (avijjā), arouse true knowledge (vijjā), and realize Nibbāna. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, the mind is rightly directed.
