[44] Bhikkhus, here, having encompassed mind with my own mind, I understand a certain person whose mind (citta) is corrupted thus: "If this person were to die at this time, he would be deposited in hell (niraya) just as if he had been carried off and placed there." For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, his mind is corrupted. And it is because of a corrupted mind, bhikkhus, that some beings here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, are reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, the nether world, hell.
