[490] Bhikkhus, there are these five obstructions (āvaraṇa), hindrances (nīvaraṇa), corruptions of the mind (citta), which weaken wisdom (paññā). What five? Sensual desire, bhikkhus, is an obstruction, a hindrance, a corruption of the mind, which weakens wisdom. Ill will, bhikkhus, is an obstruction, a hindrance, a corruption of the mind, which weakens wisdom. Dullness and drowsiness, bhikkhus, is an obstruction, a hindrance, a corruption of the mind, which weakens wisdom. Restlessness and remorse, bhikkhus, is an obstruction, a hindrance, a corruption of the mind, which weakens wisdom. Doubt, bhikkhus, is an obstruction, a hindrance, a corruption of the mind, which weakens wisdom. These, bhikkhus, are the five obstructions, hindrances, corruptions of the mind, which weaken wisdom.
