[723] Thus indeed, Ānanda, is development (bhāvanā) without directing the mind (appaṇidhāya). Thus indeed, Ānanda, development with directing the mind (paṇidhāya) has been taught by me, and development without directing the mind has been taught by me. Whatever, Ānanda, should be done by a Teacher who seeks the welfare of his disciples, who is compassionate, out of compassion — that has been done by me for you. These, Ānanda, are the roots of trees; these are empty dwellings. Meditate, Ānanda; do not be negligent, lest you be filled with regret later. This is our instruction to you.
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Gladdened, the Venerable Ānanda rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.

Sāla, and the Heap of the Unwholesome,
the Hawk, the Monkey, the Cook,
