Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Mahāvaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 19 · Section 829

[829] "Bhikkhu, when you dwell restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, accomplished in conduct and resort, seeing fear in the slightest faults, then train, having undertaken the training rules. When you have done so, bhikkhu, then, relying on virtue, established in virtue, you should develop the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). Which four? Here, bhikkhu, dwell contemplating the body in the body … in feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas—ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. When, bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, you develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way, then, bhikkhu, whatever night or day comes, only growth in wholesome dhammas may be expected for you, not decline."
